Yesterday, Huawei unveiled its new flagship smartphone, Honor Play but the event was stolen by the introduction of Huawei’s new “very scary technology”, GPU Turbo. Honor’s president, Zhao Ming, has said a lot about this device in recent times and he was behind the phrase “very scary technology”. Before the official launch of GPU Turbo, Mr. Zhao said that the commercial value of this advancement is expected to reach $10 billion.
Why Is GPU Turbo Necessary?
The smartphone industry requires innovation and with the high demand for high-quality mobile games, AR/VR applications and more graphics power, the hardware business in the Android camp is becoming over-stretched. For now, a high performing smartphone must have an accompanying high power consumption. To avoid this, many Android OEMs had to stack hardware – sometimes unnecessary. GPU Turbo can prevent this. Many have wondered what GPU Turbo will do but it is quite simple. From the launch event, GPU Turbo can improve graphics processing efficiency by up to 60% and SoC power consumption by 30%. This means that a GPU Turbo enabled smartphone will need lesser hardware to perform the same function as a non-GPU Turbo enabled phone.
How Can GPU Turbo Help Android Smartphones?
If you take a closer look at Android and iOS phones, you will realize that iOS device are usually equipped with lower RAM and battery mAh yet, they perform better than some Android phones with higher configuration. This is because Android smartphones use more hardware resources and the emergence of GPU Turbo can change that. This technology can help Andriod smartphones avoid unnecessary hardware stacking and flaws.
Who Can Use GPU Turbo?
GPU Turbo is Huawei’s technology and it is designed based on Huawei’s unique combination of hardware and software design, so it does not support other chip platforms for the time been. However, it is believed that Huawei will not monopolize this tech as it did its Kirin chips thus with a little tweak, other Andriod smartphones will be able to use this tech.
Which Category Of Smartphones Can Use GPU Turbo?
GPU Turbo is designed for all categories of smartphones. It will not only help flagship devices but also improves the performance of low-end and mid-range smartphones so that they can use technical means to avoid simply stacking hardware and still improve the user experience.
