Even without Google, Huawei can still become No. 1

Huawei’s global smartphone sale has suffered a blow ever since it was added into the entity list by the US Department of Commence.

Having placed in the entity list will restrict Huawei’s access to the US supply chain, which is detrimental not just to their telecommunication business, but also to their red hot smartphone business.

Despite that, Huawei’s founder Ren Zhangfei remains adamant that the company can still become No. 1 even without access to Google.

During an interview with CNN, Ren was asked whether he thinks Huawei can still become the world’s No. 1 smartphone brand even without Google. Ren responded saying “I don’t think that would be a problem,” and added that it will only takes more time.

In fact, even with the trade ban in place, Huawei continues to achieve a 28.2% year-over-year growth in global smartphone shipments during Q3 2019. Much of it however, owed to their strong domestic demand which saw a 66.6% year-on-year growth in the Chinese market.

The main reason for the plummeting smartphone sale in the global market is due to the absence of licensed Google Play apps and services. This means you wouldn’t be able to see typical apps like Play store, Google Maps and Google Pay pre-loaded on new Huawei smartphones. The Mate 30 series smartphones is one such example.

To tackle this issue, Huawei has been developing their in-house HarmonyOS as a possible alternative to Google’s Android in future.

However, as a short term solution, the Chinese film is expanding their AppGallery at a rapid pace to make more apps accessible to Huawei users. Now, users could even find localized payment, ride-hailing or food delivery apps easily within the AppGallery.

Having all the well strategized short-term and long-term solutions in place, there is no reason why Huawei wouldn’t be able to overtake Samsung as the No. 1 smartphone maker in the coming years.
