Now, Leica has apparently announced it’s own camera-centric smartphone known as the Leica Leitz Phone 1 which is basically a rebranded model of the Sharp AQUOS R6 amidst some design and UI changes that focuses more on a “true Leica experience”.

The new Leica Leitz Phone 1 retains the same 6.67” Pro IGZO OLED display which has an impressive 2730 x 1260 pixels screen resolution and a variable refresh rate between 1Hz to 240Hz. On top of that, it also boasts an impressive a peak brightness of 2,000 nits which is curerently the brightest among all flagship phones.

In the camera department, that’s where things start to get interesting. It’s circular camera housing at the back actually comes a magnetic circular lens cap – something we don’t see among mainstream phones at all. It will features a single 20 megapixels camera with a huge 1-inch camera sensor which is in fact the largest among all smartphone cameras. This will be complemented by a 12.6 megapixels front-facing shooter for selfie and video-calling purposes.

Under the hood, the Sharp AQUOS R6 is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 888 chipset which is paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage that can be further expanded by up to 1TB via a microSD card. Finally, the phone is also equipped with a hefty 5,000mAh battery which carries support for intelligent Charge 2.0.

At the moment, the Leica Leitz Phone 1 is available exclusively through SoftBank Japan where the phone retails at a price of 187,920 Yen (US$1,700).
