After using a wide range of smartphones over the years, I’ve realised that the features I appreciate most aren’t always the ones that look impressive on a specification sheet. A phone that lasts comfortably through a busy day, has a display I enjoy looking at and can withstand the occasional mishap can make a much bigger difference to my daily routine. That is where the vivo V80 Lite 5G caught my attention. Priced at S$499, it brings together a surprisingly well-rounded set of features, with its massive 10,000mAh battery, large OLED display and durable build giving it a character that feels quite different from many smartphones in the same price range.
The design is one area where the vivo V80 Lite 5G pleasantly surprised me. I had the Afterglow Pink version for review, and I really liked how the colour gives the phone a distinctive yet elegant appearance. The finish catches the light beautifully without looking overly flashy, while the Floating Crystal camera module adds a little more personality to the rear. Despite being positioned at S$499, the V80 Lite 5G doesn’t give off the impression of a typical budget smartphone. It has a polished and modern look that makes it easy to forget just how affordable this device actually is.
The 6.83″ 1.5K OLED display is another feature that immediately adds value to the overall experience. With a 120Hz refresh rate, support for 1.07 billion colours and up to 2,000 nits of high-brightness mode, the screen is well equipped for everyday entertainment. Scrolling through menus feels fluid, while videos, photographs and games benefit from the panel’s generous size and vibrant output. Compared with some more expensive mid-range smartphones that offer smaller or less impressive displays, the V80 Lite 5G provides a particularly enjoyable viewing experience. I also found the larger screen useful when reading articles, replying to messages or managing multiple tasks throughout the day.
Powering the vivo V80 Lite 5G is the MediaTek Dimensity 7300e, complemented by up to 24GB of extended RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. After using it as part of my daily routine, I found the overall experience pleasantly fluid, whether I was moving between apps, browsing the web or catching up on videos and social media. Nothing felt unnecessarily sluggish, and the phone generally kept pace with whatever I threw at it. And when a phone makes it this easy to keep using throughout the day, battery life naturally becomes just as important — and this is where the V80 Lite 5G really starts to impress.
Packing a massive 10,000mAh BlueVolt battery, the V80 Lite 5G offers the kind of endurance that can genuinely change how you use a smartphone. I didn’t find myself constantly reaching for the charger during a busy day, even with my usual mix of browsing, social media, photography and video streaming. Compared with many considerably more expensive smartphones that come with smaller batteries, this level of endurance is a refreshing change. For me, the biggest appeal isn’t simply the huge number on the spec sheet — it’s the freedom to use the phone without constantly worrying about what percentage is left.
On the photography front, the 50MP main camera is joined by a 2MP bokeh camera and a 32MP selfie camera, and I found the setup genuinely enjoyable to use. The main camera captures images with good detail, vibrant colours as well as an impressive level of contrast, giving everyday shots plenty of character. Portraits are also handled nicely, with the bokeh camera helping create a more pronounced separation between the subject and background.
What caught my attention, though, was the camera’s 10x zoom capability, which adds a surprising amount of flexibility when I wanted to get closer to distant subjects. It may not have the dedicated telephoto hardware found on more expensive smartphones, but the V80 Lite 5G still gives me plenty of room to experiment with different compositions. For a S$499 smartphone, I came away quite impressed by how much fun I had pointing its camera at whatever caught my eye.
The more I used the vivo V80 Lite 5G, the more its strengths started to come together. It may not offer the sheer hardware firepower or camera versatility of smartphones that cost considerably more, but it makes up for that with an enjoyable display, dependable everyday performance, surprisingly capable photography and, most importantly, exceptional battery endurance. At S$499, these are the qualities that made the V80 Lite 5G surprisingly easy for me to enjoy as a daily companion, and it’s a good reminder that you don’t always need to spend big to get a phone that ticks the right boxes.
