Last year in December, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 888 flagship chipset. Fresh information shared by reputed leaker Evan Blass suggests that the U.S. based chip maker is working on a flagship SoC with “SM8450” part number. The tipster also shared the key specifications of the next-generation chipset.
Since the part number of the Snapdragon 888 is SM8350, it seems that the SM8450 chip could be its successor. Qualcomm’s flagship chip for 2020 was called Snapdragon 865 and its successor was made with Snapdragon 888. Due to the inconsistent naming strategy of the brand, it is difficult to speculate on the marketing name of the SM8450 chip.
The tipster revealed that the SM8450 SoC is built with 4nm processor, and it will feature the Snapdragon X65 5G modem-RF system, which appears to be the successor to the Snapdragon X60 modem found in Snapdragon 888. As far as 5G connectivity is concerned, phones with SM8450 will support both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G networks.
The SM8450 chip will be equipped with Kyro 780 custom chip built with ARM Cortex v9 architecture, which was announced in March. The SD888 chip has Adreno 660 and Spectra 580 ISP, which came with a triple ISP. The upcoming SM8450 will feature the more powerful Adreno 730 GPU and it will include Spectra 680, which could be a quadruple ISP.
The tipster further mentioned that the SM8450 chip will come with support for quad-channel package-on-package LPDDR5 RAM, Qualcomm secure processing unit (SPU260), Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 subsystem, Qualcomm Aqstic WCD9380/WCD9385 audio codec, Adreno 665 video processing unit (VPU), and Adeno 1195 display processing unit (DPU). While there is no word on the launch date of SM8450, Qualcomm may announce the flagship chip in December this year.
