Following the success of last year’s Xiaomi 12 series smartphones, Chinese smartphone giant is now back to the limelight with the launch of the brand new Xiaomi 12S series smartphones that come with several noteworthy highlights which set them apart from any other flagship models that were launched during the first-halve of the year.
The newly inaugurated Xiaomi 12S series smartphones include a total of three different models such as the vanilla Xiaomi 12S, Xiaomi 12S Pro, as well as the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. Among the trio, the top-of-the-line 12S Ultra is no doubt the highlight of the entire launch event and probably the most talked-about device among smartphone enthusiasts.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the first Ultra-branded smartphone launched by the company this year and appears to be a spiritual successor to last year’s Xiaomi 11 Ultra. Apart from a completely revamped rear design, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra also features a swathe of upgrades including the adoption of the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset as well as a revolutionary quad-camera system co-developed with German optic specialist Leica.
Leading the rear camera system is none other than the Sony’s latest 50.3 megapixels flagship IMX989 imaging sensor which features a large 1” sensor size as well as a respectable 1.6 micrometer pixel size which doubles to 3.2 micrometer after a 4-in-1 pixel binning process. Sitting in front of the camera is an 8P element lens which helps to eliminate adversities like lens flare and chromatic aberration.
Rounding out the camera system will be a pair of 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera (13mm, f/2.2), 48-megapixel periscopic camera (120mm, f/4.1), as well as a 3D ToF depth sensing unit. The former two actually uses Sony’s 1/2” IMX586 imaging sensors which was also utilized in last year Xiaomi 11 Ultra.
Coming over to the front side of the phone, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra builds around a 6.73” Samsung E5 Super AMOLED display offering a super sharp QHD+ screen resolution along with a smooth 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Other than that, the display itself also supports native 10-bit color depth, DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, as well as an impressive peak brightness that goes up to 1,500 nits.
Under the hood, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is powered by the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset which is an incremental upgrade over last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with slight improvement in terms of CPU and GPU performance, as well as power efficiency. The phone will be offered in several memory configurations that goes up to 12GB RAM and 512GB worth of storage.
The phone will be backed by a respectable 4,860mAh battery which brings support for 67W fast wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Likewise, it also features two custom Surge chips that aim to improve overall battery management on the device.
Those who’re interested in the Xiaomi 12S Ultra can pick the phone from two different color options including Classic Black and Verdant Green. It’ll be priced at 5,999 Yuan ($895) for it’s 8GB+256GB base model and up to 6,999 Yuan ($1,045) for the highest-end model featuring 12GB RAM and 512GB storage capacity.
