OPPO’s Clamshell Foldable Phone with High Refresh Rate Display in Works

Currently, Samsung and Motorola are the only mainstream brands that are selling clamshell phones with foldable screens. According to a Chinese tipster, OPPO is working on a clamshell phone with a foldable dsiplay. He also shared a few key information about the device.

According to the tipster, the mysterious clamshell smartphone will be targeted towards female users. When folded, the size of the clamshell is said to measure be around 2 inches and will measure around 7 inches when its unfolded.

The device is expected to feature a LTPO screen technology, which is different from the conventional LPTS display tech. On top of that, its also expected to offer a high refresh rate. At the moment, there’s no information available on the other specifications and the final product name of the device.

In related news, Samsung is rumored to be working on the Galaxy Z Flip3 clamshell. It is speculated to break cover by July or August this year. There is a possibility that OPPO’s clamshell may debut around the same time or earlier to rival with Samsung’s Z Flip3.

In February, LetsGoDigital reported that OPPO had filed a patent for a rotating hinge with gears for a clamshell phone. Since the hinge was found to be slightly wider than the device, its likely to allow the display to unfold at different angles such as 30°, 60°, 90°, and 190°. However, it remains to be seen whether the upcoming OPPO clamshell will feature the new hinge.

Motorola’s RAZR branded clamshell phones are powered by upper mid-range chipsets, whereas Samsung’s clamshell is driven by the Snapdragon 8-series SoC. It is yet to be confirmed whether OPPO’s clamshell will have a flagship chip.
