After months of stasis, Sony is finally back to the limelight with the launch of the flagship Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III smartphones that will compete with some of the finest flagship phones in the market including those from the Samsung’s Galaxy S21 and OPPO’s Find X3 series lineup.
Just like their predecessors, both the Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III will come with largely identical specs, except for some differences in their display, camera setup, as well as memory configurations.
For starter, the Sony Xperia 1 III sports a 6.5” OLED display which offers an ultra-sharp 4K screen resolution and a smooth 120Hz screen refresh rate. The Xperia 5 III on the other hand, settles for a slightly smaller 6.1” OLED display with FHD+ screen resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Both devices however, feature the company’s signature 21:9 tall aspect ratio.
In the camera department, the Sony Xperia 1 III flaunts a versatile quad-camera system lead by a 12 megapixels (f/1.7 aperture) primary shooter with OIS stabilization and a 12 megapixels (f/2.2 aperture) ultra-wide unit.
Moving on, there’s also a 12 megapixels variable telephoto lens which can actually switch between 70mm and 105mm focal length which translates to 2.9x to 4.4x optical zoom. Finally, we also have a 0.3 megapixels 3D ToF sensor for depth sensing. As usual, these cameras will feature ZEISS optics with T* coating.
As for the Xperia 5 III, it retains the same 12MP primary shooter, ultra-wide camera and telephoto lens but lacks the 3D ToF sensor. Both devices are also able to support up to 4K recording @ 120fps. Upfront, they also have an 8 megapixels shooter for selfie and video-calling purposes as well.
Under the hood, both the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III are powered by the latest Snapdragon 888 chipset. For the Xperia 1 III, it will be available in 12GB RAM alongside an option between 256GB or 512GB onboard storage. The Xperia 5 III on the other hand, has 8GB RAM as well as an option between 128GB or 256GB storage.
The duo draw power from a respectable 4,500mAh power plant which carries support for 30W fast-charging support. On the audio side, both devices are also equipped with a front-facing stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Other than that, they also come with IP65/ 68 rating for dust and water resistance.
At the moment, there’s still any words on the pricing and availability of the Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III devices. However, Sony did confirmed that they will be available at the start of this summer.
