The Surge S1 in-house chipset was unveiled by Xiaomi in February last year. Fresh information suggests that the Chinese manufacturer will be launching the Surge S2 chipset at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018. The specs of the chipset had leaked in the latter half of 2017. The same specs have surfaced along with some additional information.
Taiwan-based TSMC is rumored to be building the Surge S2 chipset with its 16nm manufacturing technology. The Surge S2 is speculated to arrive as an octa-core chipset that features quad cores of 2.2 GHz Cortex A73 and quad cores of 1.8 GHz Cortex A53. The SoC is rumored to include Mali G71 MP8 graphics. It is also expected to feature UFS 2.1 storage and LPDDR4 RAM. It is unlikely to carry support for CDMA network. Such specs indicate that it will be able to deliver a performance that is similar to Huawei’s Kirin 960 chipset.
Since the Surge S1 powers the Xiaomi Mi 5C mid-range phone, the rumor mill has been speculating that the Surge S2 will be driving the Xiaomi Mi 6C. Fresh leaks suggest that the Surge S2 will be fueling the Mi 6X, the successor of Mi 5X. The rumor claims that the Xiaomi Mi 6X with Surge S2 will be only available in China. The smartphone may debut as Xiaomi Mi A2 in other markets.
