The new Fairphone 4 is an environmentally friendly smartphone with a removable battery

Dutch-based phone maker Fairphone has unleashed it’s first smartphone of the year – Fairphone 4 – which will be succeeding last year’s Fairphone 3. Unlike majority of the smartphones in the market, the Fairphone 4 is the only few devices which place a huge emphasize on environmental friendliness when it comes to it’s design and manufacturing processes.

Starting off with the frontside of the phone, we have a 6.3” LCD display which supports a FHD+ screen resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, as well as a decent 25 megapixels front-facing camera housed within it’s U-shaped notch for selfie and video calls.

The back of the phone, according to Fairphone, is totally made from 100% recyclable plastic (an impressive feat indeed). That’s where you find a rather unique triangular-shaped camera island which houses a 48 megapixels main camera as well as a 48 megapixels ultra-wide lens.

Unlike last year’s Fairphone 3 which adopts a Snapdragon 6 series chipset, the new Fairphone 4 settles with an upgraded Snapdragon 750G chipset with 5G connectivity instead. In the memory department, the phone gets up to 8GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage that can be further expanded via a microSD card.

To keep it’s lights on, the Fairphone 4 draws power from a respectable 3,905mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.1 support. The main highlight in this aspect however, is the fact that it’s battery pack is removable – a feature that we no longer see among modern-day smartphones.

On the software-side, the phone will be shipped with Android 11 OS out of the box and is guaranteed with two major OS updates as well as software updates that run till the end of 2025.

For those who’re interested, the Fairphone 4 is priced at €579 and €649 respectively for it’s 6GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB models in the European markets.
