A lot of accolades has been heaped on Xiaomi for releasing updates to its smartphones. Xiaomi’s update release is special because it rolls out updates to devices as old as five years and there are only a handful of company’s that does that. However, when it comes it releasing major updates, Xiaomi has been in the back seat. Presently, only Xiaomi Mi 6 and Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 can boast of having Android Oreo and they are still in beta. Xiaomi Mi A1 or Mi 5X which runs on Android Oreo does not come with MIUI but Stock Android. The likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 & Redmi Note 5 Pro which touched down only last week came with Android 7.0 Nougat. Nevertheless, it appears that Xiaomi is taking a major leap in this regard. Recent information has it that the company is currently testing the compatibility of Android Oreo on two years old Xiaomi Mi 5 and Mi MIX. This does not mean that Xiaomi will release this update for these devices but if it does, a good number of Xiaomi devices will run Android Oreo because the expected Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S & Mi 7 are scheduled to drop with the Oreo.
As a reminder, Xiaomi Mi MIX comes with a 6.44-inch Full HD IPS display and it launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow although the company has since released the Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 update for this device. It is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor and boasts of 4GB/6GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of internal storage. Its camera abilities are pretty average with a 16MP rear camera supported by a 5MP front camera. This smartphone comes with a decent 4,400 mAh battery.
As for the Mi 5, it has the same processor as the Mi MIX but it is equipped with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB/128GB of internal storage. Relative to the Mi MIX, it uses a smaller 5.15-inch Full HD IPS display and though it launched with MIUI 7 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, an Android Nougat MIUI 9 is available for this smartphone. The camera is a 16MP+4MP rear and front combination and it has a very average 3,000 mAh battery.
