HarmonyOS will come to more devices next year, but not smartphones or tablets

Ever since the HarmonyOS was announced back in August, many have been actively waiting for the first HarmonyOS smartphone from Huawei. The HarmonyOS was previously touted to be an alternative for Google’s Android in wake of the US trade ban which restricts the film’s access to US-based supply chain.

However, Huawei’s executives have reiterated their stand on many occasions that the company plans to maintain “one standard, one ecosystem” for their smartphones; and will thus prioritize Android for their smartphones.

Recently, Wang Chenglu, President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Software unit has also revealed during a Huawei Talk event that the company plans to roll out HarmonyOS to more smart products in next year with the exception of phones, tablets and computers.

This means smart products like smart TV, smartwatches, VR gadgets and speakers are likely to be driven by HarmonyOS next year. As for smartphones and tablets, they will continue to run on Android (AOSP) which are omitted of licensed Google apps and services.

To bridge the gap for the lack of Google Mobile Services (GMS), Huawei has put in tremendous effort in the development of their proprietary Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and AppGallery. If they managed to succeed in this aspect, then Huawei may not even need HarmonyOS on their device after all.
