Vivo V17 Pro Review: An impressive mid-ranger with dual-selfie cameras

If you’re currently looking for an affordable mid-ranger with good selfie capabilities, then you certainly wouldn’t want to miss out on the Vivo V17 Pro.

The Vivo V17 Pro is one of the few smartphones in the market that has a motorized pop-up camera module for it’s selfie cameras. To take things further, the device even has two camera sensors housed within the compact module.

This is just one of the many impressive features which you could find on the new Vivo V17 Pro. If this sounds exciting to you, then feel free to read the rest of the review to learn more about this smartphone.

Vivo V17 Pro Design

Courtesy of it’s pop-up selfie camera, the Vivo V17 Pro is able to employ a full-screen display that is free of obstructive notches or hole punches. The 6.44-inch Super AMOLED display has an attractive 20:9 tall aspect ratio with 1080 x 2400 pixels screen resolution.

To protect the device against accidental drops or scratches, the Vivo V17 Pro is also fitted with the latest Gorilla Glass 6 on both the front and rear chassis. That’s something which we do not usually see among other mid-ranger smartphones.

On the whole, the rear design of the V17 Pro look pretty unique. It’s quad-camera setup lies flat on the rear panel without any observable protrusions or hump.

The review unit we gotten was the Glowing Night version which features a glossy black finishing on it’s back panel. Although it looks pretty elegant in this color option, but the smudges were exceptionally obvious as well.

Vivo V17 Pro Performance

Under the hood, the Vivo V17 Pro is driven by an octa-core Snapdragon 675 SoC coupled with Adreno 612 GPU. It offers a respectable 8GB RAM and 128GB native storage space within it’s memory compartment.

Not exactly the best in class in term of performance, but it do offers sufficient power for most standard usages unless you’re a hardcore gamer of graphic intensive games like PUBG. If that’s the case, then you may observe occasional frames drop after prolonged game play.

Other than that, it’s 8GB RAM practically made multi-tasking a breeze on the device. Even with more than 10 browser tabs left opened and loads of active apps running in the background, the device continues to deliver a smooth browsing experience.

Vivo V17 Pro Camera

Let’s start off with it’s dual front-facing camera. The motorized pop-up module on the Vivo V17 Pro houses a 32 megapixels (f/2.0 aperture) primary shooter as well as a 8 megapixels super wide-angle camera.

Overall, the selfie camera is fairly remarkable. It captures selfie photos with vivid colors although there are some instances when the photos were slightly over “beautified”.

Similar to most other Vivo smartphones, there are a huge varieties of unique filters for you to edit your selfie shots on the device. In fact, photo editing is pretty simple and straight forward on the V17 Pro with it’s customized editing tools.

Moreover, the super wide-angle camera is definitely a good addition for group selfie shots as well.

Moving on to it’s rear camera, the device sports a prominent quad-camera setup comprising of a 48 megapixels primary shooter, 8 megapixels ultra-wide camera, 13 megapixels telephoto camera, as well as a 2 megapixels depth sensor.

Regardless whether you shoot the photo under bright or low light environment, you will be able to get detailed photos with good dynamic range.

Seen from the sample photos, there is a good color contrast even under low light conditions. Likewise, noise level within the photos remain relatively low.

As for the ultra-wide and bokeh modes, they were pretty average in my opinion. Nothing extraordinary, but still acceptable given it’s price point.

Vivo V17 Pro Software & Battery

The Vivo V17 Pro runs on Vivo’s proprietary FuntouchOS 9.1. As usual, this is probably one of the most intricate UI in the market. It’s not really user friendly and the camera app requires some time to get familiarize with.

Under the hood, the V17 Pro is loaded with a 4,100mAh battery which supports up to 18W fast-charging. A full charge is capable of lasting for more than a day of regular usage.

Conclusion

Priced at S$599, the Vivo V17 Pro isn’t the cheapest mid-ranger smartphone in the market. However, it do offers some really innovative and powerful features that prove it’s worth.

If you’re looking for a more affordable option, the company had recently launched a watered-down Vivo V17 smartphone in Singapore as well.
