Huawei Mate Xs finally goes official with Kirin 990 SoC and a greatly improved hinge system

During an official launch event held in Barcelona today, Huawei has took the wrap off the highly anticipated Huawei Mate Xs foldable phone. Unlike the current Mate X, the latest Mate Xs has been confirmed to go on sale outside the Chinese market in the coming months.

In terms of design, the Huawei Mate Xs remain visually similar to the current Mate X. It will however, features an upgraded internals, more durable display, as well as a greatly improved hinge system.

The Huawei Mate Xs measures 6.6-inches diagonally when unfolded, and expands to 8-inches diagonally when unfolded. Sitting atop it’s OLED panel is two layers of polymide films that helps to make the foldable display more durable.

The device utilizes a so-called Falcon Wing design for it’s hinge system that is “artistically crafted to dissolve into the device for a smooth and flat finish on both sides of the device”. This time round, the hinge is said to feel smoother and more durable than it’s predecessor.

Under the hood, the Huawei Mate Xs will be driven by a bumped up Kirin 990 SoC – up from the Kirin 980 SoC which was found in the current Mate X. It will retain it’s support for 5G connectivity that supports both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes.

The SuperSenging Leica quad-camera setup on the Mate Xs comprises of a 40 megapixels (f/1.8 aperture) main shooter, 8 megapixels (f/2.4 aperture) telephoto lens, 16 megapixels (f/2.2 aperture) ultra-wide lens, as well as a 2 megapixels ToF sensor.

The Mate Xs will be fueled by a 4,500mAh battery which supports up to 55W fast-charging. Software-wise, it will continue to rock on EMUI 10 based on Android 10 (AOSP version).

In the European markets, the Huawei Mate Xs will retail at €2,499 for it’s sole 8GB+512GB model.
