Despite shipping more than 240 million smartphones in 2019, Huawei admitted that the US trade ban still hurts the company’s smartphone business.
If not of the US trade ban, the sales figure for 2019 is expected to be significantly higher. According to Vincent Pang, president of Huawei’s Western Europe business, “the trade ban hurts Huawei’s ability to compete aboard”.
One of the key reasons is due to the lack of Google Mobile Services (GMS) on Hauwei’s smartphones which makes them difficult to sell in the global market. Therefore, 2019 was a “big challenge” for the firm as noted by Pang.
At current stage, there is still no resolution in sight for the trade ban as the US government is still unwilling to discuss about the possible removable of trade ban according to Huawei’s chief security officer, Andy Purdy.
Although Huawei’s smartphone business may currently be facing a strong headwind due to lack of Google’s services, but Huawei’s founder Ren Zhangfei had previously revealed that he remains confident that the firm can still become No. 1 smartphone brand even without Google.
