Qualcomm announces 5G-ready Snapdragon 690 SoC

Qualcomm has officially announced a brand new “6” series chipset – Snapdragon 690. This will be the first chipset in the current “6” series lineup which carries support for 5G connectivity courtesy of its X51 5G modem.

As expected, the new Snapdragon 690 chipset will continue to target mid-ranger smartphones and make 5G connectivity more affordable and widely available to consumers.

The Snapdragon 690 chipset is built on an 8nm process. It implements an octa-cores architecture consisting of a pair of Cortex A-77 CPUs and six Cortex A-55 CPUs. This will be paired with an Adreno 619L GPU under the hood.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 690 is able to deliver up to 20x faster CPU speeds and as much as 60x better graphics performance than its Snapdragon 675 predecessor.

In terms of graphics, it will be able to support up to QHD screen resolution and a buttery smooth 120Hz screen refresh rate. However, the 120Hz refresh rate could only be toggled at FHD+ screen resolution, while the QHD screen resolution at 60Hz refresh rate.

Moving on, the Snapdragon 690 chipset can also support up to 8GB of LPDDR4X memory (@1866MHz). On the photography end, its ISP is able to support up to 192MP for single camera and 32MP+16MP for dual-cameras. It will also be able to support 4K video recording at 30 fps.

Other than that, other key highlights of the Snapdragon 690 include the Hexagon Scalar Accelerator, Qualcomm 5G PowerSave, FastConnect 6200 System and Quick Charge 4+ technology.

Smartphones makers including HMD Global, Sharp, Wingtech, Motorola, TCL, and LG will be among the first to utilize the new Snapdragon 690 chipset on their upcoming smartphones.
