The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is an interesting reminder of just how far affordable smartphones have come. At S$669, it sits comfortably below the price of many premium flagships, yet Xiaomi has packed it with features that would have sounded decidedly high-end not too long ago. From its enormous 10,000mAh battery and 1.5K AMOLED display to its extensive durability credentials, this is a phone that clearly wants to offer more than its price tag suggests. After spending time with it, what I found most appealing is that the experience doesn’t feel built around one flashy specification — there’s a sense that Xiaomi has tried to make the entire package feel more substantial.
The design helps with that impression. Available in Black, Purple and the rather interesting Cloud Blush finish, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max has a clean, modern appearance with a silky matte finish that feels comfortable in the hand and does a good job of keeping fingerprints away. The rounded corners also make the relatively large phone easier to handle than its dimensions might suggest. What really caught my attention, though, is how much attention Xiaomi has paid to durability. With IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K protection, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and certification for drops of up to 3 metres, this is considerably more reassuring than I would normally expect from a phone at this price. Compared with some considerably more expensive flagships, the Redmi is arguably the one I’d feel less nervous about taking along on a rougher day out.

The 6.83-inch 1.5K CrystalRes AMOLED display is another area where the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max punches well above its class. With a 120Hz refresh rate, 12-bit colour depth, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and up to 3500 nits of brightness, the screen feels impressively vibrant and responsive. Scrolling is fluid, colours have plenty of depth, and the large canvas makes watching videos or browsing photos genuinely enjoyable. I also appreciate the attention given to eye comfort, with 3840Hz PWM dimming, DC dimming and various display modes designed for different situations.
Performance on the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max feels pleasantly well-rounded for everyday use. Powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and paired with LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage, the phone handles the usual mix of apps, social media, streaming and multitasking with little fuss. I particularly liked how quickly it moves between everyday tasks, while the large cooling system helps it stay composed during longer gaming sessions. The 3200Hz instantaneous touch sampling available through Game Turbo also gives controls a more responsive feel when gaming.
Battery life is probably the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max’s biggest party trick. The massive 10,000mAh silicon-carbon battery is enormous by smartphone standards, yet Xiaomi has managed to package it into a device that remains surprisingly practical for everyday use. On a typical work day, I managed to get up to around a day and a half on a single charge, which is impressive considering how heavily I tend to use my phone. It gives you a level of freedom that many more expensive flagships simply can’t match.
And when you eventually do need to top up, the 100W HyperCharge support makes the wait considerably less painful, while 27W reverse wired charging allows the Redmi to double up as a handy power source for other devices. But for me, the real appeal of having such a huge battery isn’t simply being able to boast about its capacity — it’s knowing that I can head out for the day, use the phone freely and still have plenty of battery left when I get home.
The camera system is perhaps where the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max shows its ambitions most clearly. It features a 50MP main camera with OIS and an f/1.5 aperture, accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP front-facing camera. Rather than simply chasing an enormous megapixel number, the phone focuses on producing more natural-looking portraits, with AI-powered imaging algorithms helping preserve facial detail, texture and colour. I found the main camera particularly enjoyable for everyday shots, where images have enough detail and punch to look good straight out of the camera. Features such as AI Glare Removal, AI Erase Pro and Live Moment also give you more flexibility to play around with your photos afterwards.
Taking everything into account, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max stands out because it doesn’t try to imitate an expensive flagship in just one area. At S$669, it gives you a huge 1.5K AMOLED display, a 10,000mAh battery, 100W charging, a capable 50MP OIS camera, extensive water and drop protection, and long-term software support. A Galaxy S-series Ultra or iPhone Pro Max will obviously offer more sophisticated processing power and a more premium overall experience, but they also cost dramatically more. The Redmi’s appeal is different: it delivers the things I notice most during everyday use while giving me considerably less reason to worry about battery life, accidental drops or bad weather.
