Honor Reportedly in Talks with Qualcomm, Aims to Become China’s Leading Phone Brand

Last month, Honor was established as an independent smartphone brand to its previous parent company Huawei, in a bid to get access to technologies that were banned by the U.S. govt under the trade ban. Fresh information published in a Chinese publication reveals that Honor and Qualcomm are already in discussions for acquiring chips for upcoming Honor phones.

According to the report, Honor and Qualcomm are in talks and may soon confirm a deal. It appears that Honor may launch smartphones powered by Snapdragon chipsets in the coming year. The Honor V40 series that is speculated to launch in January 2021 is likely to feature the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ 5G chipset. It remains to be seen whether Honor manages to launch a Snapdragon 888 powered flagship phone in the coming year.

Honor CEO Zhao Ming has reportedly told its employees that the company is now aiming to become the leading phone brand in China. This means that the Honor will be rivaling with its former parent company Huawei in China and other markets.

Zhao Ming also revealed that the company will also launching other products apart from smartphones. However, he did not reveal any information on other upcoming Honor products. It appears that Honor will continue to launch products like smartwatches, fitness trackers, notebooks, and smart TVs.

Before becoming an independent firm, Honor had been closely working with Huawei. The company had shared its supply chain and R&D platform with Huawei. The Chinese publication revealed that to solve the supply chain and R&D problems, as many as 6,000 Huawei executives will join Honor. The employees of Honor will reportedly sign new labor contract this month and it will go into effect from January. This indicates that the Honor could be aiming to become a new consumer electronics brand.
