Announced back in March this year, the OPPO Find X2 Pro is certainly one of the finest and most advanced smartphone OPPO had ever launched till date. Not only is this device an absolute beauty on the outside, its also an absolute beast when it comes to its performance level. However, is the device’s exorbitant price tag of S$1,698 really worth? We will soon find out!
Design & Display
At first glance, you will realize that the latest Find X2 Pro differs greatly from its predecessor in terms of design. More specifically, it lacks of those outlandish design heuristics including the pop-up camera module, but instead employs a more practical and minimalist design which suits more people.
The model I’ve received for review is the Ceramic Black model which has a glossy black finish on its backplate. The device is built upon premium high-density ceramic which offer it a high-end build quality. Despite its glossy finish, the rear panel isn’t really susceptible to fingerprint smudges which is definitely a plus point for users with sweaty palms.
Other than the Ceramic Black model, you can also opt for the Orange Vegan Leather edition which is also available in the local market. The back panel of the Vegan Leather model is manufactured from faux leather material which comes with a soft and premium texture.
Personally, what I like about the OPPO Find X2 Pro is none other than its ergonomic design. The device features a dual-curved front and rear panel which makes it a pleasure to hold – whether you are texting or gaming.
Diving into the specifics, the OPPO Find X2 Pro is fitted with a 6.78-inches QHD+ display that offers a buttery-smooth 120Hz screen refresh rate. The high refresh rate really makes your user interface and browsing experience much smoother as it eliminates the “blurry effect” we typically see when we scroll web pages up or down quickly.
In fact, the difference between the 60Hz screen refresh rate of my daily driver and the Find X2 Pro’s 120Hz refresh rate is pretty striking and it really quite awhile to get use to a lower refresh rate again.
Of course, high refresh rate certainly means that your battery life will be drained out pretty fast. However, OPPO provides you with the option to either manually select between 60Hz or 120Hz refresh rate, or set it on Auto mode and let the device select the appropriate refresh rate based on the onscreen content.
Currently, the Find X2 Pro is also the pioneer batch of smartphones capable of supporting up to 1 billion variations of colors on its front display. The high contrast ratio allows it to deliver a highly realistic and vibrant graphics which we won’t normally see even among other flagship phones.
Performance & Gaming
At the helm, the OPPO Find X2 Pro is powered by the flagship Snapdragon 865 platform designed by Qualcomm. It is currently the most powerful mobile SoC in the market which will bring along unmatchable performance for the device.
Coupled with its immersive graphics, the OPPO Find X2 Pro is able to support every graphic intensive game titles you can possibly think of. To showcase its beefy and smooth performance, I have recorded a short game play on PUBG Mobile with its graphic quality set to the maximum.
Regardless of its battery level, the device doesn’t shows any trace of hitching and is able to deliver a consistence performance throughout the game play until the battery literally dies off. The only thing is that the device do heat up pretty fast with maximum settings, but it won’t be a real issue if you’re only having a game or two.
To make things even better, the OPPO Find X2 Pro is also shipped with a custom “Game Space 2.0” feature which provides you with loads of interesting tools and settings which you can toggle according to your needs – whether you are gaming casually or competitively.
For instance, Game Space allows you to easily toggle off notifications and automatically reject calls while gaming. If you’re a vivid gamer, then you definitely know what kind of tragedies popup notifications could cause during gaming. In fact, the one single popup notification or call screen could ultimately cost you the entire match.
On top of that, there are also other useful options including a custom “Competitive mode” which will fire up the device to its utmost performance and frame rates – at the expense of your battery life. Therefore, it is advisable for the device to be plugged to a power source when its battery level is below 50% if this mode is activated.
Besides having a powerful processor and GPU, the OPPO Find X2 Pro is also paired with a hefty 12GB RAM and 256GB storage which are based on the ultra-fast UFS 3.0 flash storage and LPDDR5 RAM technologies.
Camera
Moving on to its camera, that’s where things start to get interesting. The OPPO Find X2 Pro had achieved a major breakthrough in the photography aspect, and could easily compete against the likes of the Huawei P40 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
For starter, the OPPO Find X2 Pro is headlined by a triple-cameras system housed within a pill-shape camera module which creates a minor bump from the surface. Surely, there may be some users who find such bump unsightly on a smartphone – but this has became pretty much a pre-requisite for a powerful cameras, and we’d seen it among most other flagship phones as well.
Among the three cameras, one of them is none other than the new 48 megapixels Sony IMX689 main shooter, while another two include a 48 megapixels ultra-wide lens, as well as a 13 megapixels periscope lens.
Just like the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom, the Find X2 Pro is also able deliver up to 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom and a maximum of 60x digital zoom. On the whole, the device has did incredibly well in the optical zoom and hybrid zoom categories.
You can see its hybrid zoom in action from the pair of images above which were shot with 5x to 8x zoom levels at some distance away from the squirrel. Color contrasts and details were generally well preserved. Its also worth noting that the device retains impressive stabilization even when doing long range zoom with some hand adjustments.
The deterioration in details and fading of colors will start to become more prominent as we cross the 20x zoom mark. Nonetheless, even at the maximum 60x zoom level, words and letters are still visible as long as the lighting is good.
Aside from its superior zooming capabilities, its also worth highlighting that the OPPO Find X2 Pro excels in “pet portrait mode” as well. You can see from the photos taken that the background has a nice and natural bokeh effect which are satisfying to the eyes.
The ability to capture good depth details allow the cat in the foreground to retain most of the fine details especially its fur. However, a close inspection will show some sign of depth estimation error as certain portion of the cat has been erroneously blurred out. But overall, I still believe it has did a good job in this aspect.
Despite not having a dedicated macro camera of any sort, the Find X2 Pro is still able to capture great closeup shots of leaves and flowers with its 48MP ultra-wide lens. The colors of the subject look realistic and highly detailed. In fact, the camera is able to capture the fuzzy texture of the leaves on the left image if you take a close look. The macro mode is automatically activated once you bring the phone 3 to 5cm away from the subject.
As for the 32 megapixels selfie camera at the front, the Find X2 Pro is certainly a must-have phone for all instagrammer out there. Images are sharp with good dynamic range regardless of lighting conditions.
Battery & Charging
The OPPO Find X2 Pro comes with a generous 4,260mAh battery which carries support for the company’s proprietary 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast-charging technology. As usual, the device will be charged via its USB-C port located at the bottom.
On a casual use with moderate web browsing and social media consumption, the battery could easily last more than a day even with the maximum 120Hz refresh rate toggled on.
However, more graphical-intensive usages like gaming and video playback could easily bring down the battery life to around 4.5 hours to 7 hours depending on your graphic settings.
Even if the battery runs out, it could be fully charged within 40 minutes courtesy of its ultra-fast charging technology. The only notable drawback is that the Find X2 Pro doesn’t come with support for wireless or reverse charging – which could be a deal breaker for a small group of users.
Pricing & Availability
The OPPO Find X2 Pro is currently available through local telcos, as well as other online and offline channels.
Pricing for the device start from as low as S$0 under a two-years mobile contract with Singtel or Starhub. Otherwise, it will be available at an off-contract price of S$1,699 via Lazada or Shopee.
