Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (SD855) Launched

American chipmaker, Qualcomm, announced the arrival of the much awaited Snapdragon 855 SoC which the company believes will open a new era of mobile terminals for the next decade. The launch event took place in Hawaii earlier today and the senior vice president of Qualcomm, Alex Katouzian, said that this chip is the world’s first multi-gigabit 5G chip.

The Snapdragon 855 is equipped with an industry-leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) and an immersive extended reality (XR) such that its AI performance is 3 times better than that of its predecessor, Snapdragon 845. Not only that, the SD855 also integrates the world’s first computer vision (CV) ISP to support cutting-edge computing photography and video capture. The gaming experience on this chip is premium (elite) and it’s at a whole new level.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is the “first” in multiple ways. Apart from those listed above, it is also the first commercial solution to support off-screen ultrasound fingerprints – Qualcomm 3D Acoustic Sensor which can accurately identify fingerprints across different types of surfaces. In addition to the high accuracy provided by this chip, there is also a high degree of security.

The Snapdragon 855 works in tandem with the Snapdragon X50 modem to support the 5G network. The company announced the list of OEMs which are expected to use this chip next year and they include ASUS, Fujitsu, Google, HMD (Nokia), HTC, LG, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi, ZTE, and other less known manufacturers. This is only the first batch and it is expected that popular manufacturers like Meizu and Smartisan will join the group in the second or third batch.
