Just a couple of days back, Huawei officially announced the new Huawei Nova 8 SE mid-ranger smartphone which will be succeeding the Nova 7 SE (Review) that was launched earlier this year. As usual, we’d done a quick specs comparison between the Huawei Nova 8 SE and the Nova 7 SE to provide you an overview on the similarities and differences among the two.
Display
Let’s start with the front display. The new Huawei Nova 8 SE features a slightly smaller 6.43-inches front display as compared to the 6.5-inches display size on the Nova 7 SE.
However, the Huawei Nova 8 SE employs a more vibrant OLED panel which will be an upgrade over the LTPS LCD display on the Nova 7 SE. Due to the usage of OLED panel, the Nova 8 SE will be featuring an in-display fingerprint scanner instead of the side-mounted scanner on the Nova 7 SE.
Cameras
In the camera department, both the Huawei Nova 8 SE and Nova 7 SE are pretty similar. More specifically, both devices feature a quad camera system comprising of a 64 megapixels primary shooter, 8 megapixels ultra-wide lens, 2 megapixels macro camera, as well as a 2 megapixels depth sensor.
The similarities also extend to their 16 megapixels selfie camera at the front. Therefore, we won’t expect to see any drastic differences in the photography aspect.
Performance
Under the hood, the Huawei Nova 8 SE will be powered by either a 5 MediaTek Dimensity 720/ 800U chipset as opposed to the in-house Kirin 820 chip found in the Nova 7 SE.
Based on the benchmark results obtained from AnTuTu and Geekbench, the Kirin 820 chipset boasts slightly higher performance than both the Dimensity 720 and Dimensity 800U SoC. As such, the Nova 8 SE fell short in this aspect.
As for the underlying memory technology, both share the same LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.1 flash storage technologies.
Battery & Charging
Although the Huawei Nova 7 SE has a slightly larger 4,000mAh battery capacity as compared to the Nova 8 SE’s 3,800mAh battery, but the Nova 8 SE far eclipse the Nova 7 SE in terms of charging speed.
For the Huawei Nova 8 SE, it borrows the insanely-fast 66W Huawei’s SuperCharge charging technology that was also found among the newly announced Huawei Mate 40 Series smartphones.
According to Huawei, the Nova 8 SE could be charged from 0 to 60% within a short span of 15 minutes. Similarly, a full charge from 0 to 100% will take a mere 35 minutes.
The Huawei Nova 7 SE on the other hand, has a slightly slower 40W fast-charging technology.
Pricing
Pricing-wise, the Huawei Nova 8 SE comes with a price of 2,599 Yuan (US$392) for its base model that features the Dimensity 720 chipset alongside 8GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage.
The Nova 7 SE however, was launched with a price of 2,399 Yuan (US$339) for its base model with 8GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage.
