Twitter may permanently remove your account if you’ve been inactive over 6 months

For those of you who’ve been inactive on Twitter for over 6 months, then you may want to login by December 11th to prevent your account from being permanently removed.

A Twitter spokesman has explained in an email to The Verge on why the company is embarking on this mass cleanup of inactive user accounts.

“As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter. Part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy.”

So if you’re one of those who’d taken a long break from Twitter, then you may soon receive an email from Twitter carrying a subject line “Don’t lose access to @(username),” whereby (username) is your twitter handle.

To prevent your account from being permanently deleted, you only need to login to Twitter and follow the instructions of the on-screen prompts before December 11th.

Needless to say, such a massive cleanup process will probably take place over many months – so we shouldn’t expect the recouped usernames to be made available any time soon.
