Xiaomi founder explains why their devices does not have waterproof protection

In an official press event yesterday, Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun has finally cleared the air as to why the company doesn’t provide waterproof protection for their devices even though many of their fans have been urging the company to roll this feature to their flagship at least.

The reasons are actually very simple. Firstly, the water resistant capability of the device will deteriorates possibly even after any slight damage was done to the device.Secondly, having a waterproof feature will incur additional cost to manufacture the device. He went on to explain that if users are willing to pay additional 20-30% of this additional cost for this upgraded handset, then they will consider manufacturing one in the future as well.

Before he ends his presentation, the founder also urges the Xiaomi Mi1 users to upgrade to their latest Xiaomi 3S flagship claiming that the 2,000 Yuan flagship has already been ‘killed’ by the few hundred yuan 3S.
