Around two months ago, Xiaomi had rolled out MIUI 8.2 update to a wide range of handsets. Fresh information suggest that Xiaomi has accidently sent out an email on the next edition of MIUI (probably the MIUI 9) to the app developers. The email has revealed that the alleged MIUI 9 would bring two new features such as split screen and Picture-in-Picture (PIP).
All the upcoming Xiaomi phones as well as the ones that are currently running on Android 7.0 Nougat will be getting the split-screen functionality. Hence, the feature is expected to hit several Xiaomi phones such as Mi 6, Mi 5c, Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Redmi Note 4X, Redmi Note 4, Mi 4C, Mi 4S, Mi 5, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, and also Mi Pad 3 tablet. Speculations have it that MIUI team is working on bringing the split-screen feature on Xiaomi devices running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.
In April, Xiaomi had started a poll on MIUI forum to check the need of split-screen function. The feature received more than 7,000 votes and the poll revealed that nearly 80 percent Xiaomi users are eagerly waiting for the feature. The Chinese firm has confirmed on Weibo that the MIUI 9 would be launching in the second half of the year.
In the recent past, Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun has expressed that the design of MIUI 9 will be smoother, more stable and powerful. A screen recorder feature has appeared on MIUI 8 Developer Edition which indicates that the feature would be also coming on MIUI 9.
