Xiaomi may be developing a clamshell foldable phone as well

The Motorola Razr is the first world’s first foldable phone that has a retro-styled, clamshell design. However, besides Motorola, it seems like there are also other smartphone makers who’re interested in developing such a device as well.

Today, a couple of patent diagrams submitted by Xiaomi had been spotted over at China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) have suggested a possible intention for Xiaomi to develop a clamshell foldable phone in the near future. The patent diagrams submitted by Xiaomi shows a slight resemblance to that of the newly announced Motorola Razr.

However, there are some obvious design differences between them as well. Seen from the diagram above, Xiaomi’s foldable clamshell features only a small rectangular display when the device is folded. This is unlike that of the Motorola Razr, which has a slightly larger 2.7-inch outer quick view display. Similarly, there are also obvious differences in their camera setup and placement locations.

This apparently isn’t the only foldable smartphone design patented by Xiaomi. Previously, the Chinese smartphone maker had also patented a reverse-folding phone design which features 5 selfie cameras.

Whatever it is, most of these foldable smartphones are beyond the reach for most of us due to their hefty price tag.
