Helio G80 gaming-centric SoC has been announced by MediaTek

After introducing the Helio G70 SoC last month, MediaTek is now back yet another G-series offering – Helio G80 SoC. As it’s name suggests, the latest chip will sit between the Helio G70 and Helio G90 SoCs.

One of the main highlightS of the Helio G80 chip is none other than it’s HyperEngine Game Technology. This technology “features an intelligent resource management engine that ensures sustained performance and longer game play”.

The Helio G80 SoC is based on an octa-core architecture comprising of a pair of Cortex-A75 CPUs (clocked at 2GHz) and six Cortex-A55 CPUs (clocked at 1.8GHz). Here, you may realize that the Helio G80 in fact utilizes the same processing cores as the G70. However, it’s A55 cores operate at a higher frequency than those found on it’s G70 counterparts.

On the graphical side, it will be aided by a Mali-G52 GPU operating at up to 950MHz. Likewise, it can also produce a maximum screen resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels.

In terms of memory, the Helio G80 chip will also be able to support up to 8GB of LPDDR4X memory (@1800MHz), as well as eMMC 5.1 storage. However, unlike the Helio G90, it will not come with any UFS support.

On the photography end, the ISP for the Helio G80 is able to support up to 48 megapixels for single-camera sensor, or 16MP+16MP for dual-camera sensors.

To further boost the camera capabilities of the Helio G80 chip, there are also advanced hardware including dedicated depth engineCamera Control Unit (CCU)Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Rolling Shutter Compensation (RSC) technology that enhances video panning and ultra-fast recording (up to 240fps).

Unlike the recently announced Dimensity 800 SoC, the Helio G70 will not support 5G connectivity. However, it will be able to support most of the common connectivity options including 4G Carrier Aggregation (CA), dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0.
