Huawei ranked highest in terms of Android security update

Even though we have been hearing countless security patches rolled out to Samsung devices recently, but it seems like the Korean manufacturer is still way behind Huawei in terms of keeping the security of their smartphones up to date.

Android Update 2

In a latest research by DuoSecurity, out of all the Huawei smartphones eligible for receving the monthly security update, 77% of of them have been up kept to date for the latest security treats in the Android EcoSystem. Samsung on the other hand, only rolled out security patches to 18% of their devices eligible for receiving the same update. Keeping in mind that Samsung currently owns approximately 52% (according to AppBrain) of the market shares in the Android smartphone market, there is an urgent need for intervention from the Korean manufacturer in keeping their devices secure.

As seen in the chart above, Samsung was ranked 5th among the 9 OEMs being researched by the company. Sony and HTC of course, are way lagging behind in the security point of view.

Android Update 1

According to DuoSecurity, out of 68% of the eligible devices, only 25% of them are running on the latest security patch, leaving the majority of smartphones susceptible to the latest form of malicious attacks which no doubt include the infiltration of smartphones by the “Godless” apps – probably one of the deadliest exploits which infected a large number of smartphones in India.

In case you do not know, the “Godless” apps are capable of installing malicious codes on Android smartphones and make use of its open-source rooting framework called android-rooting-tools which can root up to 90% of the Android devices. The fact that these “Godless” apps are readily available in the Google Play store will only make things worse.

Towards the end of the report, the company also stressed about the importance in “educating users about the importance of applying security updates in a timely manner and supply them with helpful information on how to successfully upgrade their devices.”
