Google is currently working on its second-generation foldable phone. The successor to the original Pixel Fold will be called the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and not Pixel Fold 2, claims a report by AndroidAuthorrity.. It is to be noted that the name change has come later in the phone’s development and it is entirely possible that the Pixel 9 Fold Pro moniker is not final either.
That said, it does hint at Google’s plan to position its Fold devices as proper flagships. For reference, the first Pixel Fold was unveiled at the Google I/O event in May and thus treated as a mid-year launch just like the Pixel 7A.
Both of the devices were overshadowed by the Pixel 8 series months later, which brought a more powerful chip, new AI software features, and an improved software update policy. Thus, the first step for Google would be to launch the Pixel 9 Fold Pro, alongside its flagship lineup.
According to reports, there will be four devices at Google’s October event as opposed to the usual two.
- Pixel 9, codenamed tokay, will be the successor to Pixel 8
- Pixel 9 Pro, codenamed caiman, will be a new device with the specs of the Pro XL but a form factor of the regular Pixel 9
- Pixel 9 Pro XL, codename komodo, will be the successor to the Pixel 8 Pro
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold, codename comet, will be the successor to Pixel Fold.
Google Pixel 9 Fold Pro specifications (rumored)
At this stage, it is almost certain the second-generation Pixel Fold will skip the Tensor G3 chip. The yet-unannounced Tensor G4 and the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup will power it. It is said to arrive with 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 4.0 storage.
The leaked CAD renders of the Google Pixel Fold 9 Pro show it will sport a triple camera setup. The redesigned camera module houses it alongside an LED flash and what appears to be a microphone hole. The phone retains its predecessor’s slate-like form factor but with design cues similar to the Pixel 9 series.
