Last month, with the introduction of the ZTE Axon 20 5G, ZTE became the first brand to launch a smartphone with under-display selfie camera. A couple of other brands such as Vinsmart and Rakuten have also launched phones with under-display selfie camera. However, mainstream phone brands are yet to launch such phones. Rumors had claimed that Samsung’s Galaxy S30 / S21 series flagship phones arrive next year could be equipped with the innovative technology. However, a new report by a South Korean publication claims that the technology will not be available on the next Galaxy S series phone, but rather it could be arriving on the Galaxy Z series foldable phone.
According to The Elec, Samsung has decided not to use the in-display camera technology on the Galaxy S30 series. It is being said that the low production yields of the technology is the reason behind the company’s decision to not to make it available on the next S series smartphones.
Instead of the S series, the in-display camera technology could be arriving on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 foldable phone, which is expected to break cover in the second half of the year 2021. This means that the Galaxy S30 series will probably continue to sport a punch-hole design.
At present, there is no word on the specifications of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. What is evident is that Samsung is aiming to provide users with a high screen on the large-sized foldable. The original Galaxy Fold came with a notch on its foldable screen and the successor Galaxy Z Fold 2 offers a higher screen scape thanks to punch-hole display design. It goes without saying the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with under-display camera technology will offer all-screen experience.
As mentioned above, other leading smartphones are also working on smartphones with in-display camera technology. Xiaomi is expected to launch its first phone with under-display camera technology in the coming year.
