Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460 SoCs goes official

After launching the Snapdragon 865 and 765G SoCs back in December last year, Qualcomm is now ready to introduce their new line of entry-level and mid-ranger chips.

The new chips announced today include the likes of Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662, as well as Snapdragon 460. These chips are likely to be found among most of the upcoming mid-ranger smartphones, except for those which supports 5G connectivity since they are 4G-only SoCs.

However, these chips are able to support the latest Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 NavIC positioning system.

Snapdragon 720G

First and foremost, the Snapdragon 720G is basically a gaming-centric SoC that brings most of the Snapdragon Elite Gaming features to the device.

According to Qualcomm, it is said to deliver “smooth HDR game play, dynamic color range and contrast, realistic and immersive in-game environments, and high-quality, synchronized sound with Qualcomm® aptX™ Adaptive”.

It’s Snapdragon X15 LTE modem is able to achieve an impressive download speed of up to 800 Mb/s as well as an upload speed of up to 300 Mb/s.

The Snapdragon 720G is built on a 10nm LPP FinFET process and comprises of 8 CPU cores including 2 x Kryo 465 Performance cores and 6x Kryo 465 Efficiency cores. It will feature an Adreno 618 GPU which promises 15% better performance and efficiency.

Snapdragon 662

The Snapdragon 662 on the other hand, isn’t any gaming-centric SoC. However, it promises to deliver “astonishing camera and AI capabilities” for smartphones.

It will feature the latest Qualcomm Spectra 340T ISP which is capable of supporting triple-camera setup, and could support up to 48 megapixels for single camera. The in-built Snapdragon X11 LTE modem supports a download speed of up to 390 Mb/s as well as an upload speed of up to 150 Mb/s.

The Snapdragon 662 is built on a 11nm process and also comprises of 8 CPU cores including 4 x performance and 4 x efficiency Kryo 260 CPU cores. It will pack an Adreno 610 GPU under the hood as well.

Snapdragon 460

Among the three SoCs announced today, the Snapdragon 460 is the only entry-level chip. It will however, “boasts a gigantic leap in performance across the board in the 4-series”.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 460 is the first chip within the 4-series which “features performance CPU cores and an updated GPU architecture that translates into up to 70% and 60% increase in performance, respectively “. It will utilize the same Snapdragon X11 LTE modem which is also found in the Snapdragon 662 SoC.

The Snapdragon 460 is built on a 11nm process and comprises of a total of 8 x Kryo 240 CPU cores. It will be paired with an Adreno 610 GPU as well.

In the coming months, we do expect quite a number of mid-ranger smartphones to adopt the Snapdragon 720G SoC. Some of these devices are expected to come from Xiaomi and Realme.
